Carlos Villabón was born in Espinal, Tolima, in 1983. From a young age, he was a keen observer of his surroundings, capturing the austere yet magical environment of Colombia. He began painting what he saw around him, and as he refined his technique, his work evolved through various stages, growing in complexity and depth. While Villabón is primarily a conceptual artist, he remains a talented painter, known for his large-format paintings.
His artistic journey started with impressionism, transitioned through the visual games of surrealism, and incorporated elements of art history, resulting in paintings that both surprise and provoke thought, all while maintaining the beauty of traditional painting. Villabón expertly plays with the concepts of light and darkness, exploring how the materials that exist between these two extremes influence our imagination, shape our perceptions, and affect our emotions.
